How to Decorate Small Bedrooms
You may want to decide on a theme when decorating a small bedroom. Think about the purpose of the room. For example, you could loosely theme it around a great antique roll-top desk or piece of artwork you love.
Choose items to place in your small bedroom that are proportionate to the size of the room. For instance, you probably wouldn’t want to place a giant four-poster bed in a bedroom which is only 6’ x 8’. The bed would be about the only thing you could put in the room! Don’t skimp on color. Just because you have a small bedroom to decorate doesn’t mean you have to stick with bland white or a light color palette. Choose any colors you like as long as the intensity of each is the same. Paint one wall with a deeper color that has the same intensity. This will make the wall seem further away and will give the room depth. You can also use pale shades as a base wall color. Use cool colors like blue, green or purple to make the walls seem to recede.
Use vertical spaces rather than only the horizontal ones. Yes, you’ll want to be aware of how you place your furniture in a small bedroom, but why waste the wall space? Build shelves on the walls or hang them from the ceiling. This will give you more floor space and use the area that you have to its fullest.
Choose window coverings which can be opened to totally show off the window. Natural light flooding into a room will help it look larger. Hang the curtains as close to the ceiling as you can to add height to a small bedroom.
Avoid clutter to help your room look larger. Clutter doesn’t have to be just ‘stuff,’ it can also mean having too many pieces of furniture. Use the minimum amount of furniture to open up a small space. Find hidden areas and use them for storage. This will allow you to keep your needed items in your room without cluttering it up.
